Editing a tracking number: Dynamic Number Insertion
With Dynamic Number Insertion (DNI), you know how many visitors called your company from your webpages, and especially which traffic source these visitors previously came from: SEO, SEA, social media, …
In your Call Tracking account, you can set DNI for one or several tracking numbers. This way, the permutation target (the contact number on your webpages) switches with your tracking numbers, depending on which traffic source your visitors are from.
Before activating dynamic insertion for a tracking number, make sure that DNI feature is activated for your whole account.
How to activate dynamic insertion for a tracking number
In the Numbers tab, select a tracking number to activate DNI for, and then click on the Edit icon in the Actions column.
In the edition form, get to the Dynamic Number Insertion section and activate the option Insert dynamically on a Website.
Once the option is turned on, two new fields are displayed in the form: Traffic Source and Permutation Target. Next step is setting a traffic source for your tracking number.
How to set a traffic source for a tracking number
In the Traffic Source field, click on the selector to show the available traffic sources that can be set for your tracking number. Details about each traffic source are available below:
Organic Search
With Dexem Call Tracking, you can dynamically show a tracking number for visitors using the following search engines: Google, Bing and Yahoo.
You can select more than one search engine to use one single tracking number for all of them. Then, the data in your reports will be based on the total amount of phone calls generated by all of these search engines.
Google Adwords (Google Ads)
Select Google Adwords as traffic source to see the phone number on your pages switch with the edited tracking number for your visitors coming from Adwords.
Bing Ads (Microsoft Advertising)
This time, we talk about sponsored content designed for Bing search results, and the process is similar with Google Ads.
Direct
Selecting direct as traffic source means that you can quantify how many calls you receive from visitors who are already familiar with your Web addresses, and who can find them directly.
Single Web referral
Select Single Web referral as traffic source to display the edited tracking number to the visitors from your referral website. Then, type its domain name in the field Referral URL as follows:
All Web referrals
Like for a single Web referral, by selecting All Web referrals as traffic source for your tracking number provides you data about the number of callers reaching your pages through backlinks on all external websites.
Select URL as traffic source for the edited number to track phone calls of visitors coming from a specific campaign or source whose name is specified in the URL.
Other Sources
Select Other Sources to assign your tracking number to all the traffic sources for which you have not affected a specific tracking number.
All
Select All to track the calls from all of your traffic sources with this tracking number.
How to activate dynamic insertion with Multi-website feature
If you have enabled and configured multi-website feature in your account, an additional field is available in the Dynamic Number Insertion section. In this field, you can select the website on which the phone number will be dynamically replaced.
How to set permutation target
Once you set a traffic source for your tracking number, you are asked to define a permutation target. This is the contact number on your webpages to be dynamically replaced by a tracking number, depending on which traffic source your visitors are coming from.
For example, if your contact number is displayed as follows on your website:
Here is how you can type it in the tracking number form’s Permutation Target field:
How to set the right format for your permutation target
Your permutation target must be included in the HTML code of the webpage showing that number. Note that phone numbers in HTML attributes or JavaScript code will not be taken into account and replaced by the tracking number.
Also consider that the way your permutation target is displayed on your pages (for example : +1 (XXX) XXX-XXXX) depends on the number format when typed in the HTML code and your Call Tracking account. Spaces, . or – signs between figures in the phone number are automatically erased when filling the Permutation Target field.
